Frederikshavn 20 December 2005. MAN B&W Diesel’s Service Center Denmark has successfully finalised a major main engine overhaul onboard the factory freezer trawler ‘Lazurnyy’. The 1988-built vessel is one of four large fishing vessels owned and operated by Westrybflot in Kaliningrad, Russia.
A sister vessel was inspected earlier this year, and the work on the ‘Lazurnyy’ started on November 27th and was completed on December 14th. ‘Lazurnyy’ is powered by two 3500 BHP, 6 cyl. Pielstick PC 2-5 main engines built under licence by Russki Diesel. Via a Valmet main gearbox, each engine drives a 1500 KVA shaft alternator. The shaft alternators have been subjected to a complete overhaul, including the fitting of new main bearings. The two main engines’ overhaul included:
• Cylinder heads
• Pistons
• Connecting rods
• Cylinder liners
• Fuel injection pumps
• Fuel injection nozzles
• Turbochargers
• Main bearings and thrust bearings
The docking of the 103-metre factory trawler was handled by, and in cooperation with, the neighbouring Orskov Yard. Frederikshavn was selected since Westrybflot wanted to improve and optimise the major engine overhaul processes in connection with their dockings - both with regard quality and duration. “We cooperated with Orskov Yard on the docking and offered a tailored engine overhaul package”, says Steen Hviid Mortensen, Senior Manager of Service Center Denmark.
On completion of the work, ‘Lazurnyy’ returned to Kaliningrad to take onboard the fishing gear and remaining crew. During the docking, ‘Lazurnyy’ had a crew of 40. However, when fully operational the vessel requires a crew of 72. After Kaliningrad, the vessel will proceed to the South African waters and fishing grounds.
“The customer was recommended to Frederikshavn as the ideal one-stop place for docking and engine overhaul, due to excellent cooperation within our group - all the way from SEMT Pielstick in France to MAN B&W Diesel in St. Petersburg”, finishes Steen Hviid Mortensen.
