14.03.2003 - In 2000, a customer in Germany ordered three centrifugal compressors from MAN Turbo for the extraction and processing of liquid chlorine gas at one of its plants. The scope of the order included gear units and oil systems. The compressors are driven by electric motors. The plant was commissioned successfully in 2001.

Chlorine is a basic raw material in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. It is used for cleaning and disinfection as well as in an antiseptic capacity. The most widespread application of chlorine is in the manufacture of plastics, where one of the most familiar products is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). At the same time, other chlorine-free plastics such as polycarbonate are produced on the basis of chlorine. In chlorine processing, compressors are needed primarily for the preparation of industrial raw materials. The special features of the product make high demands on the machines: chlorine gas is stable at around 150 °C, but combustible above approx. 200 °C.

MAN Turbo has been using horizontally split compressors for chlorine processes in the chemical industry worldwide since 1968. The customer commissioned its first two compressors for chlorine gas back in 1973. These two compressors were successfully revamped in 2001, achieving a capacity increase of 37 % with the old casing and the new internals.
