12.05.2003 - In 2001, a customer in China ordered one of the largest machinery trains for a terephthalic acid plant. The plant operates on the basis of the DuPont process. The machinery train consists of an integrally geared compressor, steam turbine and radial expander. It was manufactured in Germany, tested as a complete train, assembled as a compact unit and dispatched to China by sea. The plant was commissioned successfully in mid-2002.

Terephthalic acid is a basic material used in the production of polyester. MAN Turbo was closely involved from the outset in developing and optimizing the mechanical engineering aspects of the terephthalic acid process. The principal machine used in the oxidation process is the five-stage multi-shaft integrally geared compressor (air compressor). A radial process gas expander recovers energy from the waste gas. The condensing steam turbine takes care of the process heat.

The project demonstrates MAN Turbo’s long-standing experience of the production of complete machinery trains and the successful operation of these plants.
